Swindon Open Studios Pop Up Gallery

During the February half term, I was offered the opportunity to both curate and display my artwork in an exhibition of selected artists from Swindon Open Studios, in the Swindon McArthur Glen Designer Outlet.

Swindon Open Studios is a community art event, where artists open their studios and making spaces for members of the public to browse for free. This experience allows you to purchase items directly from artists, as well as see how they work with the materials in their spaces. I joined Swindon Open Studios last year as the first public outing with my work in the local area.

The Outlet opened one of their units to us from the 10th to the 18th of February 2024, allowing us to showcase six of the artists that participated in Swindon Open Studios 2023. There was a mixture of abstract, portraiture and landscape in a variety of mediums. All the pieces were available to purchase.

I displayed nine of my bold abstract portraiture works, several of which had not been shown to the public. The strong colours of the portraiture work attracted many visitors into the exhibition. Here, we were able to talk about Swindon Open Studios and the event that is held at the end of September. It was somewhat surprising how many local members of he public had not heard of it before, and it was wonderful to spread the word of what the event is all about.

Throughout the week, I was able to start to talk about my work, and the work of others, more fluently by using jargon free language where others were able to engage in the conversation. The curation and continuation of the exhibition throughout the week was fantastic and I for one hope that we are able to continue the partnership between Swindon Open Studios and the Designer Outlet Swindon.
