Movement and The Human Body

Throughout the course of Moonlight CordMoonlight Dawn, and Red Angel, the three Chinese operas that I designed, performed and edited last term, I found myself drawn to the movements of the actors and the manipulation of the body. Within many Chinese Operas, gymnastic and martial arts moves are used when simulating fighting, and occasionally used through the duration of the Opera as a performance piece. All of these moves were professionally timed, choreographed and recorded, unlike many day-to-day movements.
Movement and the human body for me has prominently stood out, especially the way in which we are able to train, or naturally, position ourselves. This led me onto my connection with Pole Fitness, which is a sport I take with Reading University Pole Fitness Society. Pole fitness is the use of technique and strength training, in order to expand your pole ability. The pole has two ‘settings’; static (the pole does not move), and spinny (the pole spins on the axis, often making spins easier)

Many people have captured themselves doing Pole Fitness by filming themselves from the floor, the top or bottom of the pole, or by getting someone else to film them. Movement on the pole has not been captured by using a GoPro attached to the head, while the pole is spinning. This lead me to have some fun with the GoPro headgear. The camera was placed at two different angles, in order to capture the general head movement along with some bodily movement, and the movement of the extremities of the body along with head movement. These videos have not been directly posted to this blog for the privacy of those in the background and the nature of the video. Images below are examples of the moves performed by myself for the duration of the videos including; front hook spin, back hook spin, chair spin, several variations of flag pole, chopper and the remi sit.
